One fine Friday afternoon, Tommy decided to host a picnic.

He heard from the weatherman that this weekend was going to be especially hot in his area, and he wanted a chance to meet up with his friends that he had not seen since the summer prior. Contemplating on what to bring to his potluck picnic, he decided that he should bring a frozen beverage since it would extremely hot outside. When he opened his refrigerator, he found twenty different types of beverages: Water, Coffee, Soy Milk, Whole Milk, Non-Fat Milk, Chocolate Milk, Ice Tea, Raspberry Tea, Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Fanta, Root Beer, Pibb Xtra, POWERade, Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Lemonade, Grape Juice, Guava Juice, Cranberry Juice.

With so many choices, how could he know which one would stay frozen as ice the longest? He decided to conduct a little experiment and postponed his picnic till next weekend, since it would still be the same weather outside.

Tommy took an ice tray for each of his twenty different beverages. He poured each liquid in an ice tray and placed it in the freezer to make them into ice cubes.

All of his ice trays were exactly the same size and shape to make sure that the size and shape of the ice cube would not affect the melting time. He put the ice trays into the freezer and waited until the cubes froze…

After all twenty beverages froze into identical shape and sized ice cubes, he took them out of the freezer.

He then set them out in his room temperature room and recorded the time that each of the ice cubes took to melt back fully into a liquid.

According to his experiment, Soy Milk lasted the longest and Grape Juice lasted the shorted in the room temperature. Therefore, he decided to bring frozen Soy Milk for next week’s picnic…

As he grabbed the carton of Soy Milk, he found a chart that shows nutritional facts of the beverage on the side. He then wondered and decided to see that if any of the nutritional values of the liquids affected or correlated with the melting time of the liquid.

To save him time to do math homework that is due next week, he picked two categories to look at: Calorie and Carbohydrate information. Since each beverage had different volume, he calculate calorie per 1ml of liquid.

Figure.2

To see the relationship between calorie per 1ml and melting time, he arranged Figure.1 into the same order as Figure.2.

Figure.3

The result from Figure.3 showed almost no correlation with Figure.2, so he repeated the same procedure for carbohydrate values.

Instead of the amount of carbohydrate per 1ml of liquid, he decided to use “% Daily Value per 1ml of liquid” as most drinks display carbohydrate information as this.

Figure.4

The corresponding graph for the melting time is:

Figure.5

Sadly, he couldn't find a relationship between the carbohydrate values and melting time neither, as Figure.5 and Figure.4 do not show any clear correlation. However, he noticed that generally drinks with more carbohydrate, such as sugar, melt faster then those with less carbohydrate, as Soy Milk (which lasted the longest) is at the lower end while Grape Juice (which lasted the shortest) is at the upper end in Figure.5.

Although his experiment did not prove that frozen drinks that contain less carbohydrate last longer, it taught him that Soy Milk is the best choice for his next week’s picnic 
