nVinyl chloride is
an established human carcinogen.
nIt is used for pipes. It may also be made rubber-like and
is used in squeeze bottles.
• What is commonly called vinyl is PVC. So the stuff that is used in
car seats and furniture covering is PVC.
• The danger from vinyl chloride is primarily from being close to
factories where vinyl chloride is made or used.
• Vinyl chloride is present in PVC but the FDA requires that the amount
be less the 50 ppm for PVC in contact with food.
• PVC is also used to make shrink wrap.
• PVC is fairly hard but with addition of plasticizers it may be made
flexible.
