Silicones
nSilicones are silicon containing organic compounds.
nThey have the
advantage that they are more stable to heat and oxygen.
nSilicone is made
up by alternating silicon and oxygen atoms with organic groups such as a
methyl group bonded to the silicon.

• Silicon like carbon forms four bonds. Oxygen forms two bonds.
• The siicon and oxygen alternate in a chain with two organic groups
bonded to each silicon atom.
• Silicone polymers are superior to organic polymers. For example a
silicone sealant will last much longer than a latex sealant but it also cost
much higher.
• Silicone oil is also resistant to heat and is used in hydraulic
systems for aircraft.
• Silicone is used for implants to replace cartilage. Silicone gel has
received much attention because of its use in breast implants.
